Reading: Instructional Programs and Materials

The essence of the schoolwide reading model is what we teach students in reading everyday, or the “core” instructional program and materials. These should be drawn from a solid research-base, align with Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and support multiple needs of students.

Along with a research-based core, the instructional program and materials should provide systematic and explicit instruction on critical reading priorities for each grade level. One tool that has assisted schools as a guide to mapping out these instructional priorities is the Curriculum Maps developed by Simmons and Kame'enui.

Finally, instructional programs and materials at all levels of student need should be implemented with a high level of fidelity.
