Early childhood teachers know instinctively that for children to learn, we must help focus their attention. Emerging research suggests that there is, indeed, an interactive relationship between behavior and learning. Integrating academic and behavior supports - particularly in the area of reading - can lead to improved student outcomes. Steve and Tami will share the rationale for a combined approach, key features of an integrated model, and specific strategies for supporting behavior and reading with young children.

A critical component of implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) involves using data for decision making. Participants will learn about the schoolwide SWIS application, the add-on system for tracking students’ response to the Check-in / Check-out intervention, and a newly developed system for tracking students’ response to individual, function-based support plans. Finally, participants will learn how to link their SWIS data with implementation fidelity data from PBIS Assessment.
